Lecture: The North Sea as a Treasure Trove for Palaeontology and Archaeology
The woolly mammoth is the iconic symbol of the Ice Age. Yet it shared the vast mammoth steppe with woolly rhinoceroses, sabre-toothed cats and early humans. This immense lowland once stretched between the British Isles and the Netherlands and now lies hidden beneath the North Sea.
Finds recovered from the seabed provide a unique insight into the animals, vegetation and human presence that shaped this long-lost landscape.
In this fascinating talk, Dick Mol will explore not only the world of palaeontology but also the archaeological evidence of human presence in this part of north-west Europe. For the first time, a wide range of Stone Age artefacts, including hand axes, will be on display. These discoveries originate from several locations across the North Sea.
